Ben's Creative Output

Hi Benjamin

I am not sure if my insights will help, but I find what you are working on to be very timely. Mike and I tried to run a group to iron out the "bugs" in Workbook 1. I invited some former counselling clients as I assumed that where they were in their stage of growth and development, would allow Mike and I to see how the teachings can be applied. Unfortunately, because we failed to address some ethical and safe practice issues, we were forced to shut the group down.

So what does this have to do with your assignment? My question to you is how do you see your other formal training and growth and development journey experiences as you tackle this writing assignment? What does the Kaftka story have to do with what it is you are trying to convey and write about with regards to LP teachings? I find this very interesting and am asking because I am working on the LP Ethics and Standards of Practice and wondering what you are writing about, your insights, and how you internalize your desire to incorporate LP teachings into this writing assignment, and whether there may be some way to utilize your writing into our Ethics and Standards of Practice Manual.

Hi Gina - Great to see you making some posts on the forums again!!

Two things:

#1) my essay on Kafka and my essay on the LP are actually not related, except they were both different assignments for the same writing class.

#2) regarding the LP Ethics and Standards of Practice that you are writing, I think that is terrific. Just as a suggestion, what i am trying to do with my writings is to get into the habit of 'publishing early and often'. So you could consider posting some of your writings in early draft form to get feedback on them as you work.

As for my specific ideas regarding some ethical standards, the biggest thing that comes to mind for me [from my perspective as a man] is how to S-P-E-L-L out the appropriate ways to engage with female students. that is a big issue. maybe we should make another thread to really discuss that.

in meantime, here is a statement of ehtics that is required by the yoga alliance

but i think we should discuss further some thoughts on LP ethics. maybe somebody could create another thread to start talking about that. i know there are some experiences that i had that i would like to share May the people of this world be free.

The website/blog that I am working on is really starting to come along. I feel like creating content for it is turning out to be  life-changing experience for me. Basically, I have transitioned from a consumer of other people's content, into an active creator of my own content.. and it is fun!

I have become endlessly fascinated by the world around me, and I sort of pretend like I am an "reporter from another planet" here documenting this world using my cell phone.

The two blog posts I am including here are interesting because they are an example of a new hobby I am developing, which I think could be referred to as "digital story-telling." Basically, I am learning to use the medium of blogging to tell stories from my life.

The two below are my first attempts; I am proud of them because they include all original content: text that I wrote, videos that I shot, original photos that i took, original "audio blog" recordings that I made, as well as custom maps that I put together. (My goal as I go along is to learn how to create other types of content to include)

So without further ado, here are my first two attempts at digital story-telling: May the people of this world be free.

The River at Dusk, an original Poem,
by Benjamin Pritchard.
I wonder, sometimes, what it is that connect us,
to who we used to be,
other than
fragile memory,
often rewritten
or willfully forgot.
was it me -- or someone else --
who was here before?
i think i am me now.
but i probably thought so then too.
so what connects those me's i cannot say.
the answer,
it would seem,
must lie in the simple wisdom
of just moving forward...
trying to be OK,
with not really knowing
who exactly it even is
who is wondering about such things. May the people of this world be free.

I applied for a grant through the National Science Foundation's I-Corps program to secure funding to commercialize and further develop my piano mirroring platform. I will know by the end of the month if I got it, so keep your fingers crossed!!! The money is being awarded through the University of Akron's Research Foundation. I met with the director there last week, and have one more meeting this coming week with someone else from there.

My meeting next week has to do with creating a "value proposition" for my company. I drafted it yesterday, and will meet with the other coordination at AkronU next week to work on it. Anyway, here is what I drafted:

Kundalini Piano Mirroring Platform Value Proposition
Benjamin Pritchard / Kundalini Software

Students of the piano – especially those studying classical music – have the difficult task of striving to achieve the intra-hemispheric brain coordination which is required to develop the motor coordination needed to utilize both of their hands equally. This level of development is referred to as ambidexterity, but because of brain laterilization in humans, most people naturally tend to have a dominant brain hemisphere, which results in a dominant hand. Subsequently, this tendency often results in their dominant hand being more pianistically-developed than their non-dominant hand.

One specific pianistic technique which has historically been utilized by (concert) pianists to develop ambidexterity is called symmetrical inversion. Symmetrical inversion is a practice technique that takes advantage of the fact that both the anatomy of the human hand, as well as the piano keyboard, are symmetrical. Therefore, it is possible to play passages originally written for one hand in the opposite hand in mirror image. While a powerful practice technique, the method of symmetrical inversion is not practical for most students; this is because the technique leads to completely non-harmonic (“non-musical”) sounds.

The Kundalini Piano Mirroring Platform uniquely solves this problem by performing real-time remapping of which keys on a [digital] piano keyboard produce which pitches, therefore allowing symmetrically-inverted playing to produce aesthetically-pleasing musical outcomes. Additionally my solution additionally adds the ability to mirror only one half of the piano keyboard. This mode of operation (which is referred to as right-hand descending mode, and left-hand ascending mode, respectfully) allows one hand to play as per normal, while the other hand plays using symmetrical inversion, but with the produced pitches corresponding only to the original passage. This method allows passages which one already knows in one hand to be easily learned symmetrically-inverted in the other, because the inverted hand can “follow along” naturally.

I believe my platform will succeed in the market because it is a completely novel technology which makes it practical to introduce symmetrically-inverted playing to piano students from the very beginning. This has the potential to significantly enhance music education.

Additionally, I have produced a physical (working) prototype of my product, which because of falling hardware costs and the limited amount of processing power needed to implement this technology, can be produced cheaply, leading to high profit margins when it is sold.

Additionally, my method is both completely novel and patented, and therefore one significant potential source of revenue is in licensing it to piano manufactures. May the people of this world be free.

I have been putting some more work into my websites.

Today I wrote a page about my Philosophy, Beliefs, and World View

(I liked writing that page because while the first two sections I obviously wrote myself, the third section (my world view) I just shamelessly ripped off from the Lightning Path!! I did that because I realized that my entire world view was informed by the LP, which is amazing.)

I also put some work into the home (front) page of my website:

I have been working with WordPress now for some time and I am really starting to like it.

The next major thing I want to start adding to my website is video content, and also my photography. So stay tuned for that. But in the meantime, if anybody has any feedback on my website, let me know.

I am finding that maintaining a personal website as a hobby is a lot of fun. Plus it has helped me learn a lot about web development May the people of this world be free.

I got some more writing done on my research paper for UoPeople that I am writing on the LP:

The Lighting Path is the collective name given to a body of writings by the Canadian author and contemporary mystic Dr. Michael Sosteric.

Sosteric’s describes his oeuvre – which consists of a series of books with inter-related concepts – as a “system of self-directed human development” (The Spirit Wiki, 2019). Additionally, Dr. Sosteric has also created an “online textbook and spiritual lexicon” (The Spirit Wiki, 2019) called The Spirit Wiki, which provides canonical definitions for the concepts introduced in his books.

The Lightning Path claims to be an example of authentic spirituality, which Sosteric defines as “spirituality that encourages, supports, and facilitates Healing and Connection” (The Spirit Wiki, 2019). The precise definitions for the terms healing and connection are supplied in The Spirit Wiki, and the two topics serve as the subject matter of Lightning Path Workbook Volume 2 and Volume 3, respectfully (Sosteric, 2019).

One interesting feature of Sosteric’s body of work is that it is an example of a contemporary presentation of spiritual concepts, which is intentionally designed to be accessible and comprehensible to everyone. The thesis of this research paper is that Sosteric’s writings provide a clear presentation of otherwise esoteric spiritual concepts, whose study can help students of yoga and other spiritual traditions better understand their own primary source material, which were often written in a different historical, cultural and linguistic milieu.

To illustrate this, several themes from an ancient spiritual work familiar to students of yoga – The Yoga Sutras of Pantajali – are presented here, and compared and contrasted with similar themes present in Sosteric’s works.

The Yoga Sutras of Pantajali is a short work, which consists of 196 short aphorisms. The work concerns the subject of yoga, which Pantajali calls “union”, and defines as “restraining the thought-streams natural to the mind” (Patanjali.)

A central tenet of the worldview espoused by Sosteric’s writings is expressed in what Sosteric calls the “water glass metaphor.” The water glass metaphor posits that the human body can be considered a container for consciousness, similar to the way that a glass is a container for water (The Spirit Wiki, 2019). Additionally, just as a water glass can contain a variable amount of water, so too can the human body contain a variable amount of consciousness.

Therefore, the Lighting Path can be seen as a system of thought and practice for increasing the amount of consciousness present in one’s body, and can us help to understand what is mean by Pantajali when he speaks of “union” – simply having a full glass of water.

Also, over the weekend I finished a series of short stories that chronicle my spiritual awakening:

I am very proud of how those stories came together, and I think they are a very personal account of my own spiritual journey. May the people of this world be free.
Here is an update on some things I have been working on. I am working on my startup full-time now, and things are moving quickly.

I am currently applying for a small grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) “Innovation Corp” program, which is a federally-funded program that “prepares scientists and engineers to extend their focus beyond the university laboratory and accelerates the economic and societal benefits of NSF-funded, basic-research projects that are ready to move toward commercialization” (NSF).

(Note: I am pretty sure I will get this, and I should know within a week or so.)

I now have my Kundalini Piano Mirroring Platform implemented and patented as a physical product to sell. My next step is to work to “iterate” my product, meaning to refine it based on market-research and customer feedback.

I believe my system is of much use to pianists — and people in general — because it is a novel way to work on achieving ambidexterity, which has many benefits for one’s brain, and one’s ability to be creative. (I am attempting to expound on this thesis in the book I am currently writing, which I am calling Ambidexterity as a Path Towards Self-Actualization; I will have more to say about my book at a later date.)

I have already been utilizing my Piano Mirror for my own use. Additionally, I have taught my daughter how to work with the system, and now have one area music school on-board (!) that is interested in trying to utilize my piano mirror in their teaching curriculum.

So by my own estimation, I already consider my project to be a success. But as I continue to move forward with with my ability to market and mass-produce my offering, it would be my honor to be able to introduce my system to a larger audience.

Therefore, I am going through the process now of trying to bring what I created to the market, probably starting by redesigning the hardware platform that I am using to utilize cheaper electronics so that it can be mass-produced more profitably.

Additionally, now that the real-time hardware component of my system is complete, I am currently focusing on developing the online portion of my offering, which I am considering offering using a subscription-based model, possibly at the $5/month price point.

The subscription will allow users access to:

  • video lessons regarding symmetrically-inverted playing that I am creating
  • original piano exercises that I composed for use with my system
  • access to all the mirror-image scores I have created of traditional keyboard music, using the Online Score Viewer that I created.

(I am almost finished writing a compiler that I am calling my Mozart Transposition Engine. This program allows me to automatically produce scores notated in my Symmetrically-Inverted Notation from preexisting, conventionally-notated scores; once this system is in place, I will use my tool to populate my website with mirror-image scores by the 100’s!!)

I am working on making my first product available through my website: May the people of this world be free.

My wife and I have new office space here in Akron:

Things are moving along so fast.

Two main things I am doing here that are very meaningful to me.

#1) As is obvious, I am a student of the Lightning Path. The LP has played a significant role in my life. Therefore, I am working to present a small "art exhibit" here in this space of the Halo/Sharp Archetypes. On the surface level, people will be exposed to Oxo Halo's artwork itself, which will brighten this space. On a deeper level, as I talk to people about the art, I will "go into more detail" about some of the meaning/significance of the images, based on my understanding from the archetypal study I have done on the LP. Gently introducing the new energy archetypes of the LP into this area is a great honor for me. (I will have more to say about this at a later date.)

#2) Introducing my Kundalini Piano Mirror, which is now available to order through my website. I had the great privilege of studying music with the concert pianist Nicholas Constantinidis, who introduced the study of ambidexterity to me. My product helps to introduce ambidexterity to students from the very beginning, and I am extremely proud to be able to share it with the world. May the people of this world be free.
