Creating environments that retain employees and are conducive to the maximization of full human potential is not hard, theoretically speaking. You don’t have to endure dozens of boring seminars, read hundreds of ego-filled books, take numerous courses, spend $$$, or pull your teeth out just to get a handle on the problem. To fix your organization, focus on the quality of its relationship, end all forms of emotional, psychological, physical, sexual, and economic violence, and supply an environment that meets our Seven Essential Needs.[1] “It Takes a Village: Advancing Attachment Theory and Recovering the Roots of Human Health with the Seven Essential Needs.” Aotearoa New Zealand Social Work, 2022. https://www.academia.edu/61410417/.
Unfortunately, we don’t live in a theoretical world, we live in a practical one. Practically, creating such an environment is a major challenge, requiring not only resources but also fundamental shifts in the way we see, think about, and act in the world. It’s a challenge that is for sure, but if your concern is creating a more efficient, happier, loyal, productive, and creative workforce, then the effort is worth it.
Dysfunctional Leaders Mean Dysfunctional Organizations
Let’s face it. Humans are hard-wired to live in groups. Humans are hard-wired to follow the group leader. Well-organized groups (for hunting, for gathering, for defense) is how we survived for millennia. But when leaders are dysfunctional, groups are dysfunctional. When groups are dysfunctional, it takes incredible energy to keep them from imploding. Toxic leadership coupled with long patterns of toxic behaviour create bitter and damaged employees and a destructive corporate culture that can cost you $$$ and can be incredibly difficult to change.
